The Michelin Deutschland 2020: Hotels & Restaurants was released on March 6. In Frankfurt, my home-base when I am in Germany, the Michelin 2020 Deutschland lists 9 starred restaurants. I have eaten in all of them and written on schiller-wine about most of them.

There is no restaurant in Frankfurt with 3 Michelin stars, there are 2 with 2 Michelin stars and 7 with 1 Michelin star.

Here are the 9 Michelin-starred restaurants, in alphabetical order:

Carmelo Greco with Chef Carmelo Greco, 1 Michelin Star

Michelin 2020: Carmelo Greco offers Italian-cum-Mediterranean cuisine based on the use of good, fresh ingredients. This can be enjoyed in the attractively elegant and modern interior or outside on the pretty terrace. Popular lunch menu.

Erno's Bistro with Valéry Mathis, 1 Michelin Star

Michelin 2020: The very epitome of savoir vivre, this charming little bistro could hardly be more authentic with its panelling and traditional decor of lamps and wine bottles. A lively atmosphere and simple, fully flavoured, French food made from the finest ingredients complete the picture.

Restaurant Français with Chef Patrick Bittner, 1 Michelin Star

Michelin 2020: The best quality produce is used here to create subtle, beautifully balanced, unusual combinations that you can enjoy in the stylish, high-ceilinged dining rooms served by the attentive front-of-house team. In summer, enjoy alfresco dining outside in the courtyard. The lunchtime menu offers great value for money.

Gustav, with Chef Jochim Busch, 2 Michelin Stars

Michelin 2020: High-quality, stylish and straightforward. The modern decor of this restaurant is also reflected in the cuisine which is highly individual and attractively minimalist with a beautiful interplay of contrasts and textures. Some of the tables offer a view of the kitchen. Smaller lunchtime menu on Fridays.

Lafleur with Chef Andreas Krolik, 2 Michelin Stars

Michelin 2020: Lafleur serves beautifully presented, classic yet modern cuisine full of masterful aromatic combinations. Set in a glazed, Bauhaus-style annex to the prestigious Palmengarten hospitality complex, it also offers an upmarket, minimalist-style interior and attractive walk-in temperature-controlled wine store.

Restaurant Villa Merton with Chef André Großfeld, 1 Michelin Star

Michelin 2020: André Großfeld offers a skilful combination of classic and modern, creating sophisticated dishes that are full of flavour. The interior of this listed villa in the diplomatic quarter is upmarket, the service friendly, professional and attentive.

Picture: Dinner at Restaurant Villa Merton, with 1 Star Michelin Chef André Großfeld, Frankfurt, Germany

Seven Swans with Chef Ricky Saward, 1 Michelin Star

Michelin 2020: If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, SEVEN SWANS is it. Sit back and take in the cool, hip vibe, with floor-to-ceiling windows affording a great view of the River Main in Frankfurt’s narrowest building (seven storeys high! ). Enjoy vegan cuisine made from organic produce (many of the ingredients come from the restaurant’s own farm not far away) in the relaxed dining room.

Picture: Chef Jan Hoffmann, Seven Swans, Serving. See: Dinner at Seven Swans (Chef: Jan Hoffmann, 1 Star Michelin) in Frankfurt, Germany

Tiger-Gourmetrestaurant with Chef Coskun Yurdakuls, 1 Michelin Star

Michelin 2020: If you value exclusivity and privacy, you’ll be in your element in this elegant restaurant, which has the ambience of an English club. Occupying the same building as the Variety Theatre, the restaurant comprises small rooms and alcoves where professional staff serve flavoursome, modern cuisine prepared from top-quality produce.

Weinsinn, with Chef Daniel Pletsch and Head Chef Jochim Busch, 1 Michelin Star

Michelin 2020: You’ll need to ring the bell to gain access to this city-centre restaurant in the Bahnhofsviertel. Once inside, you’ll find a smart, high-ceilinged room designed in the minimalist style which provides the ideal setting for modern, creative, pared-down cuisine which is strong on texture and contrasts. The staff are as friendly as they are professional.

Annette sent out this e-mail to those who signed up for the tour on March 31, 2020.

Dear All,

it is with a very, very heavy heart that I have to inform you that I have to cancel the tour scheduled for June.

This is not at all my personal decision. The decision was made for me by the Covid-19 pandemic and how this is spreading and becoming more serious as the days go by and impacting the entire globe. Believe me I was so much looking forward to the travel with you to the beautiful Rhône Valley but it would be totally irresponsible to hang on to the possibility of traveling in early June.

It is incredible how fast and violently the virus races around the world. It is just 17 days ago when I wrote you that there are 2,300 cases in France. Looking at the numbers in France and Germany today and at the situation in the US - my email of March 14th sounds like a message from another world.

At this point and in view of this unprecedented situation I can not even offer an exact date for rescheduling the tour. However I can assure you that this tour will take place with exactly the same program at a later date, preferably in the fall 2020. When the time comes to think about a new date, I would love to discuss the date with all of you so that it would fit into everyone’s schedule.

Let me know if you prefer to have your deposit payment refunded or if you want to leave the downpayment for the future tour.

Let us all be responsible and taking precautions not to get sick.

Stay healthy - that’s the most important issue right now.

Best

Annette

Happy Easter and Passover 2020

Dear wine friends,

I want to wish you and your family a Happy Easter and Passover. These are difficult times and Easter and Passover 2020 are different from all previous holiday celebrations we had in our lifetime.

With a heavy heart I cancelled all wine tours programmed for 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic is racing around the world and becoming more serious as the days go by. I knew the virus would spread but I can’t fully wrap my brain around it yet. Slowly but surely it dawns on me that we all will be in this for quite some time and that group travel will probably not possible for the rest of this year.

The tours scheduled for this year will take place in 2021. At this point and in view of this unprecedented situation I can not yet offer an exact date for rescheduling the tours but I keep you in the loop as soon as I have firm plans.

I use these quiet times to do research and to plan tours to new destinations: the Loire Valley, Austria, and to the cradle of wine: the beautiful country of Georgia.

Let us all be responsible and taking precautions not to get sick.

Celebrate these days with family and friends (digitally) and stay healthy.

Best
Annette

Pictures: Dining with Friends in Times of the Coronavirus Lockdown using Zoom

A few days ago we had our first online dinner, using the Zoom app. There were 5 of us in three different locations. The dinner started at 7:30 pm and lasted 6 hours. We all enjoyed the online dinner very much. The Zoom app is a fantastic tool to allow social contacts in times of social distancing.

Restaurant 360 Grad

The food was from the 1 Star Michelin Restaurant 360 Grad in Limburg, about an hour from Frankfurt, and the wines were from Cool Climate, a wine store in Frankfurt specialising in natural wines,.

Pictures: Chef Alexander Hohlwein and his Partner in Life and Business Rebekka Weickert

The food came in a large Restaurant 360 Grad Foodbox, containing the semi-finished, cold food, mainly in vacuum bags, and instructions from Chef Alexander Hohlwein on how to finalize the preparation of the food. Annette spent 10 to 20 minutes in the kitchen before each course, while I was opening the next wine.

Pictures: Restaurant 360 Grad Foodbox

The dinner was orchestrated by Dirk Eisel who is quickly emerging as the guru of online dining and wining.

Picture: Dirk Eisel and Christian Schiller. See: Winemaker Dinner with Christoph Wolber of New-wave Producer Weingut Wasenhaus, Baden, at Schaumahl, Offenbach/ Frankfurt, 16 Points Gault Millau, Germany

3-Course Dinner

This was a 3-course dinner. We had a choice between 3 to 4 options for each course. We all took the sushi to start with. Annette and I had veal with asparagus as main course. The others had fish. Annette and I ended the meal with a dessert, the others with a cheese plat.

Thank you and Zoom Happy Hour

The Restaurant 360 Grad Foodbox Menu that Chef Alexander Hohlwein and Rebekka Weickert offert last weekend (easter weekend) was a big success. They sold more than 100 foodboxes as Alexander and Rebekka say here in a facebook message to their clients.

For the coming weekend, Annette and I were invited to a Zoom Happy Hour with friends in the Washington DC area.

Annette and I enjoyed very much LiquidLife at Home with Carolin Spainer of Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot, and TV Chef Frank Brunswig on Thursday, May 7, 2020, an online event where Chef Frank Brunswig was cooking and Carolin Spanier presenting her wines in Hohen-Sülzen, Rheinhessen, while Annette and I were in the kitchen at our home in Frankfurt, connected via facebook. It was the first LiquidLife at Home event. It went very well. Congratulations!

Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot are among Germany's estates that have reached world-class status. They are owned and run by the winermaker couple H.O.Spanier and Carolin Spanier-Gillot.

Carolin has been hosting LquidLife since 2015, typically in Bodenheim, in the posh tasting room/ restaurant/ event location of Weingut Kühling-Gillot, where she grew up and which she took over from her parents after her studies in Geisenheim.

Carolin Spanier: Wine is a rare feeling of joy capable of bringing high culture and uninhibited joy into harmony. At our winegrowing estate, we speak to the whole person, starting with our architectonic concept and our wines but ultimately winning hearts and minds through our boundless warmth. As Goethe wrote: Here I am a man, here dare it to be! Our LiquidLife in Bodenheim offers a range of high-end connoisseur events, bringing a metropolitan flair to our humble Rheinhessen stage. Star chefs and sommeliers from well-known wine bars in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna come here to Bodenheim to cook and delight you. All the class, but none of the big city pomp and circumstance. Rather: Immaculate yet relaxed. Honest but never brash.

Annette and I have been to a number of LiquidLife events in Bodenheim already. The LiquidLife at Home event with TV Chef Frank Brunswig took place in Hohen-Sülzen at Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier, where Carolin lives with her husband H.O. Spanier and their children. Most of the events of Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot take place in Bodenheim, but some also in Hohen-Sülzen. In fact, for our last ombiasy WineTours visit, Carolin asked us to join her at her home Hohen-Sülzen. The outlay of the villa allows for receiving guests in an intimite way, which is more difficult in the event location in Bodenheim. Buying

We picked up the wines at Weingut Kühling-Gillot in Bodenheim a couple of days before the event. Alternatively they offered to send us the wines by DHL.

Picture: Picking up the Wines

From Bodenheim, we went to the Tuesday market in Mainz to buy the ingredients for the 2 courses, Chef Frank Brunswig had communicated to Annette.

Picture: At the Market in Mainz

The Baerlauch, we picked up in the forrest during our daily bike tours.

Picture: Collecting Baerlauch on a Bike Tour

Chef Brunswig had also given instructions in terms of preparatory work and arranging the ingedients in the kitchen. I had put the wines in the fridge to cool them down.

Pictures: The Wines

Finally, I had put the computer in the kitchen so Annette could hear and see what Chef Frank Brunswig was doing.

Cooking

At 6:30 pm the show started. Chef Brunswig cooked for 90 minutes. Annette followed his instructions in our kitchen. At the same time, Carolin presented the 3 wines and we tasted them briefly. One also could comment and ask questions via the comment function, what I did..

After the show, Annette and I moved to the dining room and enjoyed the meal in tranquility.

Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot

Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot are among Germany's wineries that have reached world-class status. They are owned and run by the winermaker couple H.O.Spanier and Carolin Spanier-Gillot.

It was only in 1993 that H.O. Spanier founded Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier in Hohen-Sülzen at the southernmost tip of the Rheinhessen Wonnegau region. Weingut Kühling-Gillot can look back to a longer history. It is located in the north of the Rheinhessen region, close to Mainz. Carolin took over the winery from her parents after she finished her studies at Geisenheim University.

Since their marriage, Carolin and H.O. have reorganized and streamlined the operations of Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot two wineries quite a bit.

There is no wine made in Bodenheim at Weingut Kühling-Gillot any more. The winemaking facilities of both Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot are in Hohen-Sülzen.

H.O. takes the lead in terms of winemaking for both wineries and Carolin is more active on the administrative and marketing side of both wineries.

Carolin and H.O. have constructed a lovely tasting room in Bodenheim at Weingut Kühling-Gillot which is the central place for selling and marketing the wines of both Weingut Kühling-Gillot and Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier. You cannot buy wine of Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier in Hohen-Sülzen, but only in Bodenheim.

Carolin and H.O. live with their children in Hohen-Sülzen in a posh villa just next to the winemakng facilities of Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier and Weingut Kühling-Gillot.

Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier/ VDP

VDP: This estate is located in Hohen-Sülzen at the southernmost tip of the Wonnegau district, not far from Worms. The best vineyards are transversed by thick, underground beds of limestone from which the roots of the vines can absorb their final nutrients during the hot months of summer. Proprietor H.O. Spanier makes wine in an uncompromisingly natural manner. Thus, it comes as no surprise that he has cultivated his vines biodynamically since 2005. For Spanier, Riesling acts as a translator that interprets the influence of the southern Wonnegau’s extremely lime-rich soils in wine. “That’s what interests me: the spectrum of aromas of the stones and soil that lies beyond the fleeting sensation of fruit.”

Weingut Kühling-Gillot/ VDP

This wine estate lies in Bodenheim, not far from the renowned “Roter Hang” (red slope) – the porous red mix of slaty clay and sandstone that rises from the earth like a boulder near Nackenheim, only to disappear a few kilometers southward in Nierstein. The nearly 300-million-year-old ribbon of primary rock that surfaces here brings forth very distinctive wines. Organic viticulture is a fundamental prerequisite. At Kühling-Gillot, the usual late harvest, painstaking selection, and spontaneous fermentation in large oak casks enable the red slate to be perceptible in the wines. In their youth, the wines are charming and smooth; with time, they reveal their origin.

The Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours was fully booked but had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Starting on May 15, Annette issued short posts on facebook briefly describing what we would have done on that day had the tour taken place, using pictures from previous tours.

I am re-posting these short daily accounts along with a general introduction to the tour here on my blog.

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours

Germany is so closely identified with Riesling (and yes, it is the largest producer of Riesling world-wide) that you may be surprised to learn that the country is also very strong regarding the Burgundy grapes. It is the third-largest producer of Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), the largest producer of Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), and the second largest producer of Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) in the world. Join us as we discover the southern German wine regions that produce bone dry, opulent Rieslings, outstanding Pinot Noirs and whites from Burgundy grapes. We will step across the Rhine River to compare the wines of the Eastern (German) and Western (French) Rhine valley and we will get a feel for the beautiful, quaint Alsace region with its incredible picturesque wine villages dotted with half-timbered century old buildings. Enjoy the Pfalz, the second largest German wine region by growing area and only topped by Rheinhessen, which it borders to the north. From there, the Pfalz stretches to the French border 53 miles to the south and borders Alsace. In this region French and German vineyards melt into one another and some wineries on the French side own vineyards in Germany and vice versa.

Annette Schiller: Since the pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you. Sold-out: Alsace + Germany/South Tour by ombiasy WineTours.

Today is Day 01 of the tour.

The group would have met in the Hotel Hilton in the beautiful city of Mainz, one of the Wine Capitals of the world. The afternoon would have taken us to two of the outstanding wineries in the Rheinhessen and Nahe wine region: Weingut Wagner-Stempel and Weingut Dönnhoff. All pictures were taken by Christian Schiller on previous visits. I really, really miss being able to travel with you. To plan and implement the tours is soooo much work but also soooo much pleasure for me.

Today is Day 02 of the tour.

After a good night sleep at the Hilton Hotel in Mainz we head out to explore the southern part of the Rheinhessen region. Rheinhessen is with 65,000 acres under vine Germany's largest wine region. We travel through rolling hills covered with vineyards as far as the eye can see. Our first visit today will be Weingut Wittmann, a family estate since 1663 focusing on Riesling. Philipp Wittmann converted to biodynamic viticulture in 2004. His Rieslings grow on limestone and produce beautiful wines with tension, depth, and an incredible intensity.

After touring the cellars and a thorough tasting our stomachs start to growl and we continue south to Bissersheim to have lunch at Knipser's Halbstück, a wonderful restaurant part of Weingut Knipser. Of course, after lunch we visit the winery just five minutes down the road. Here we have the chance to taste Riesling and wines from the Burgundy grapes. The Grand Cru Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) is phenomenal. Knipsers are also known for their non-traditional grape plantings such as Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot, and for producing cuvées in a "Bordeaux" style.cc Christian Schiller

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 3

Annette Schiller: Today (Sunday, May 17) is Day 03 of the 2020 Germany South & Alsace Wine Tour organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours

Since the Pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you.

We would have spent the night in Schifferstadt at the cosy Hotel Salischer Hof with its charming half-timbered architecture. We now leave the Rheinhessen wine region, cross over the Rhein river into the Baden wine region. Baden is with 40,000 acres under vine Germany's 3rd largest wine region. It has a somewhat odd layout with 9 distinctively different districts due to the very different terroir. Baden's wine region basically straddles for 240 miles along the right bank of the Rhine river from Heidelberg to the Swiss border. Lying primarily in the Rhine rift with the protection of the Alsatian Vosges Mountains to the west and the Black Forrest to the east, Baden’s climate is the warmest in Germany. 50% of the vineyard area is planted with Burgundy grapes, almost 50% is red wine.

Our first stop today would be at Weingut Sven Nieger to the south of Baden-Baden, belonging to Baden's Ortenau district, planted predominantly with Riesling. Sven belongs to the young generation of winemakers, sometimes called the "enfants terribles" of the German wine scene because they follow their very own ideas. After some years of sampling experiences abroad he founded his own winery in 2012. The single vineyard Rieslings are powerful, and he shows a sensitive touch for Pinot Noir.

Lunch time is approaching and we we all grab some wine bottles and head out to the vineyards where we would have enjoyed a wine pairing luncheon with Sven and his friend Farid Fazel, renowned chef from Baden-Baden. By the way: the weather today, on Sunday, May 17 was just beautiful. What a shame, that we had to miss out on this vineyard lunch.

In the afternoon we would have just traveled some miles south to meet Robert Schaetzle, owner and winemaker of Weingut Schloss Neuweier. Differences could not have been bigger between our previous visit: here we are at a historic estate where wine making started some 700 years ago. Robert focuses on Riesling and they grow in the steep (60%) vineyards Schlossberg and Mauerberg which were terraced in historical times. The very special microclimate here is the basis for the fresh, minerally, racy wines with excellent aromas of citrus and tropical fruit.

We get sleepy after eating, drinking, tasting and learning and I am sure that everyone will welcome the 1 1/2 hour bus ride to the Boutiquehotel am Stadtgarten in Freiburg where we will spend the night.

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 4

Annette Schiller: Today (Monday, May 18) is Day 04 of the 2020 Germany South & Alsace Wine Tour organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours

Since the Pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you.

Today we explore the Kaiserstuhl, one of the 9 sub-regions of Germany's Baden wine region. The Kaiserstuhl region is the warmest grape growing area in Germany and the soils consist of mineral-rich, chalky loess on top of volcanic subsoils. It is a breathtakingly beautiful region. Today we will delve into Germany's wines made from Burgundy grapes. The Kaiserstuhl produces gorgeous Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Did you know that Germany is the 3rd largest producer of Pinot Noir, the 1st of Pinot Blanc and the 2nd largest producer of Pinot Gris world-wide? We will have a busy day today with visits to three top estates.

Our first visit takes us to Weingut Bercher Arne Bercher in Burkheim, not too far from the French border. The roots of this estate go back to 1457. In 1756 they built the current Manor house with the vaulted underground cellar still in use today. The vineyards are mostly planted with Burgundy grapes (40% Pinot Noir).

We continue to Weingut Stigler in Ihringen. Same here, the majority is planted with Burgundy grapes, but Andreas Stigler loves Riesling and to experiment with non-traditional grape varieties such as Sauvignon-Blanc and Chenin Blanc.

Just across the street from Stigler there is a great restaurant "Holzöfele" where we have lunch. It is asparagus season in Germany and you can guess what we are going to have.

In the afternoon we are going to visit Weingut Köbelin Arndt Köbelin Weingut in Eichstetten. I got to know this estate through a friend of ours and when tasting my first Köbelin Pinot Noir I was hooked. Arndt built an ultra modern, puristic winery with a fantastic terrace guaranteeing for spectacular views on the vineyards and the Black Forest and Vosges mountains.

We return to our hotel in Freiburg and will have some time to think about all the wines we tasted and to explore this cosy town with the famous "Freiburger Münster".

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 5

Time flies, today Tuesday, May 19 is already Day 05 of the 2020 Germany South & Alsace Wine Tour organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours

Since the Pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you.

After a good breakfast we leave Freiburg and drive south to the far southwestern corner of Germany where the country borders both Switzerland and France. We arrive in Efringen-Kirchen to visit Weingut Ziereisen. Here we are in another sub-region of Baden, the Markgräfler Land known for producing wines from the Gutedel grape, known as "Chasselat" or "Fendant" in Switzerland. Hanspeter Ziereisen is fanatically dedicated to produce age worthy, stunning Pinot Noir. He is also one of the few in Germany who makes a very, very good Syrah.

After an extensive tasting we now leave Germany, and cross the Rhein river into France.

Lunch time approaches and we stop at a typical Alsatian restaurant to have Flammkuchen. We can't linger around too much since we still have work to do in the afternoon: visiting two top Alsatian wine domaines.

The first stop is at Domaine Dirler-Cadé in Bergholtz Ludivine Dirler. Since 1998 this domaine works according to biodynamic principles. Almost 50% of their vineyards are Grand Cru vineyard sites and it is here where my all-time favorite Crément d"Alsace is produced.

See: Tasting at Domaine Dirler-Cadé with Jean Pierre Dirler and Ludevine Dirler-Cadé - Germany-South and Alsace 2017 Tour by ombiasy WineTours

We continue north on the Alsatian wine trail to visit Domaine Weinbach, one of the most prominent and well-known estates in Alsace. They also work biodynamically. The domaine is beautifully situated at the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill within the 12.5 acres large Clos des Capucines, a former Capuchin monastery.

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 6

It is hard to believe but today (Wednesday, May 20) is already Day 06 of the 2020 Germany South & Alsace Wine Tour organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours.

Since the Pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you.

Last night we already experienced Alsatian hospitality when we gathered at the "Au Lion d'Or" in Kaysersberg for a wonderful meal. Today we will visit two iconic wine estates and will have time to explore the incredibly picturesque, medieval Alsatian villages.

Maison Trimbach Anne Trimbach in Ribeauvillé is our first stop this morning. The wine producing history dates back to 1626; today the estate is run by the 11th, 12th, and 13th generation. Quality rules, Jean Trimbach said "All French 3-star Michelin restaurants carry Trimbach wine".

See: At Maison Trimbach in Alsace with Hubert Trimbach– Germany-South Wine Tour by ombiasy (2014)

Back in Kaysersberg for lunch there is some time to explore the village, the birthplace of Albert Schweizer who received the Nobel Prize in 1952 for his philosophy of "Reverence of Life".

We drive south again to visit Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Turckheim. Oliver Humbrecht, owner and winemaker was the first Frenchman to have received the Master of Wine title. Oliver Humbrecht was among the first ones in Alsace to convert to biodynamic principles in the vineyard.

For the evening we have a very special treat; we will have dinner in the fabulous 1-star Michelin restaurant La Table du Gourmet" in Riquewhir, one of the most beautiful Alsatian villages. I am sure that Chef Jean-Luc Brendel will prepare a delicious menu for us which we will pair with Alsatian wines.

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 7

Today, Thursday, May 21 is Day 07 of the 2020 Germany South & Alsace Wine Tour organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours

Since the pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you.

Today is a holiday in most of Europe's catholic countries: Ascension Day. Usually lots of people go on day trips to go hiking, to visit the wine country, etc. Not today though, Ascension Day 2020. In France restaurants, hotels, wineries are still closed due to the Covid19 threat; in Germany most of these places opened a week ago but people are reluctant to go out and there still are strict hygienic rules in place that make those outings a lot less fun.

This would have been the last day in Alsatian wine country of our wine tour. We would drive up the Vosges mountains to Wihr-au-Val. Here the famous "Munster" cheese is produced and we are going to visit a cheese dairy La ferme Versant du Soleil. We could pet the cows, visit the barns, and Monsieur Mader will show us everything there is to know about making Munster cheese.

Just in the neighborhood there is Vins Schoenheitz Dominique Schoenheitz. After tasting Munster cheese we very much welcome cleansing our palate with the excellent, pure, mineral wines of this domaine. Domaine Schoenheitz cultivates 45 acres of vineyards which are entirely concentrated on the very steep slopes of the magnificent Valley of Munster. These are the highest vineyards in Alsace with granitic soils and extreme conditions for vine growing.

See also:Winemaker Dinner with Adrien Schoenheitz, Owner/ Winemaker, Domaine Schoenheitz in Alsace and Chef Chef Jacques Haeringer at L'Auberge Chez Francois in Great Falls/ Northern Virginia/ USA

We are very lucky, lunch time is approaching and besides a cheese dairy, and a winery Wihr-au-Val also boasts of a 1 star Michelin restaurant Le Bistro de la Nouvelle Auberge. Chef Bernard Leray will prepare a fantastic menu and Adrien Schoenheitz, who will join us for the luncheon, will perfectly pair his wine with the dishes. This day is a perfect finale to our journey through Alsatian wines and culture.

I must admit that for me the Alsace is the most beautiful wine region: the unbelievable quaint medieval villages, home to a huge population of storks, the vineyards on the gentle slopes of the Vosges mountains, - the entire region is an eye candy.

For us is time to say Good By to France and to head north to Germany's Pfalz wine region. After a three hour bus ride we will spend the night in Landau, in the heart of the southern Pfalz wine region.

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 8

Today is Friday, May 22 - Day 08 of the 2020 Germany South & Alsace Wine Tour organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours

Since the Pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you.

We will have a very busy day ahead of us with visits to three wineries and a very special wine pairing dinner.

Our first visit would be at Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz in Siebeldingen. Focus here is on Riesling and the Burgundy grapes. The Rebholz were the pioneers to produce through fermented dry wines in the southern Pfalz region. Due to the purity of the wines they have an enormous ageing potential. Hansjörg Rebholz definitely belongs to the top five winemakers in all of Germany. Their famous vineyard sites are "Kastanienbusch" and "Im Sonnenschein".

Our second visit this morning will be at Weingut Dr. Wehrheim in Birkweiler, just a stone throw from Siebeldingen. The Wehrheims also own parts of the "Kastanienbusch". We have the fantastic opportunity to do a back to back tasting of a Riesling "Kastanienbusch" from two exquisite producers - and both follow the guidelines of biodynamic viticulture which makes the wines even more comparable. Tasting these many wines makes us hungry and we will enjoy a nice lunch.

We now head north on the German wine trail to Wachenheim to visit Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, one of the historic, iconic wineries of Germany. With 212 acres under vine it numbers among the largest estates in Germany. It is a treasure trove of top-rated vineyards (9 Grand Crus, 6 Premier Crus). I quote Joel Payne: ".... given their sheer vineyard potential ....- this may well be the best and most consistent producer of great dry Riesling in the world". In the evening we are in for a very special treat. We will enjoy a wine pairing dinner at the Hofgut belonging to the winery with Steffen Brahner, the GM of Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf.

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 9

Saturday, May 23 is Day 09 of the 2020 Germany South & Alsace Wine Tour organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours

Since the Pandemic forced me to cancel the tour I will go on the journey mentally and I will share this tour with you.

It is unbelievable but this is the last day of the tour with winery visits. We have an impressive program today. We visit one more winery in the Pfalz region followed by two winery visits in Rheinhessen.

The Pfalz is Germany's second largest wine region with 57,500 acres under vine and stretches for 60 miles from the the border with the Rheinhessen region south to the border with the Alsace. Production is 60% white wine and 40% red wine, predominantly Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). 13,000 acres are planted with Riesling which makes the Pfalz the largest Riesling region world-wide. The Pfalz Rieslings are generally bone-dry and more powerful than the Riesling wines from the Mosel, Nahe or Rheingau regions.

Right after breakfast we visit Weingut Rings in Freinsheim, the northern part of the Pfalz. Brothers Steffen and Andreas Rings have been running the estate together since 2008. They farm 75 acres of vineyards that are planted in an even split between red and white grape varieties. Their Rieslings and Pinot Noirs acquired a national and international reputation as first class wines.

See: Tasting and Cellar Tour at Weingut Rings in Freinsheim, Pfalz, with Andreas Rings - Germany-South and Alsace 2017 Tour by ombiasy WineTours

Here we say good by to the Pfalz and cross into Rheinhessen. In Flörsheim-Dalsheim, the southernmost corner of Rheinhessen, we visit Weingut Keller. Klaus Peter Keller is the undisputed number one among Germany's producers of dry Rieslings. His old-vine Cuvée G-Max is the world's most expensive dry Riesling with a price hovering around 2000$ per bottle. I quote Jancis Robinson:"If I had to choose one wine to show how great dry German Rieslings can be I would choose a Keller Riesling. Those wines are the German Montrachets."

After lunch we head north and meet the Rhein river again. Between Nierstein and Nackenheim is the "Rote Hang" (red slope), a spectacular geological formation - the steep drop of the Rheinhessen Plateau towards the Rhein river. Here red clay and sandstones emerge, which were created around 280 million years ago under subtropical conditions. In addition to this ideal soil, the south-south-east slope and the huge body of water create perfect conditions for the vines to thrive.

We visit the Weingut Sankt Antony in Nierstein where we will taste Rieslings from the Grand Cru sites of the Rote Hang as well as red wines from Blaufränkisch grapes, a rarity in Rheinhessen.

In the early evening we drive to Mainz where we will check in to the Hilton hotel in Mainz.

Our last dinner together will be at Weinhaus Ladendorf. Roland Ladendorf, owner of this wine bar is a dictionary when it comes to German wines. Of course we also will have some of his great wines.

Germany/ South and Alsace Tour 2020 by ombiasy WineTours: Day 10 - The End

Today is Sunday, May 24, 2020, and if Corvid-19 would not have required me to cancel the tour this would have been the day to bid farewell to our fellow travelers of the 2020 wine tour to Alsace and the southern German wine regions organized by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours.

After a sumptuous breakfast at the Hilton Hotel we would have done a sightseeing tour through Mainz. Mainz was founded by the Romans 2000 ago and is a treasure trove of Roman and German history, and pagan and Christian culture. Towering over the old town's romantic maze of cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses is the huge Romanesque 1000 year old cathedral, which was for centuries the burial place of ruling Prince Archbishops and is still today the burial place for the Bishops and Cardinals of Mainz. It is also the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg who invented the printing press in the 1430s. The museum dedicated to him has two of the remaining editions of the Gutenberg bible.

Some of the group would now head out to the Frankfurt airport to catch a flight back home, others would continue to Kloster Eberbach to attend the International Riesling Symposium, which was supposed to start on Monday but has been cancelled too.

It is always a sad moment for me to realize that the tour has come to an end. I miss the winery visits, the tastings, and the friendships that have developed within the group. But I am certain that this tour will happen sometime in 2021. I am soooo looking forward to actually travel with you next year, CHEERS!!!

Germany’s Grosses Gewächs (GG) wines are released on September 1. These are the ultra-premium dry wines from the very best vineyard sites made by some of the best producers in Germany.

As a rule, the white wines are released in the year following the harvest, the red wines are released after an additional 12 months of aging. Increasingly, wine producers are giving their white wines more time and are releasing not only the red wines but also the white wines after 24 months. Thus, this year`s tasting included both vintage 2019 and vintage 2020 white wines.

Many events throughout Germany take place in the weeks and months following the release of the new GGs. In addition, there is a highly exclusive tasting for a selected group of about 150 importers, journalists, bloggers, sommeliers and other multipliers on the Monday and Tuesday before September 1 in Wiesbaden. You meet there the who-is-who of German wine. I regularly participated in this tasting during the past years and reported about it on my blog schiller-wine.

Pre-release Presentation of the 2019/ 20 GGs from the Rheingau

German producers take advantage of the high-caliber group gathering in Wiesbaden for the Pre-release Tasting and organize side events.

For 8 years in a row, interrupted only through the Covid-crisis, the VDP producers of the Rheingau have organized a special event on the Saturday before the Wiesbaden tastings and presented their new GG releases to their guests. All winemakers introduce their wines personally. The more formal part is then supplemented by a party-style get-together with the winemakers and more tasting.

8 years ago, this was a speed-boat event on the Rhine River including tasting. 7 years ago, the VDP.Rheingau flew their guests with helicopters over the Rheingau, from Hochheim to Assmannshausen, followed by a party at Weingut Robert Weil (Wilhelm Weil is the President of the VDP.Rheingau). 6 years ago, we went into the terroir; this was a most interesting conference-type tasting were we learned a lot about the different terroirs of the Rheingau from its producers. Again, the tasting was followed by an after-party at Weingut Robert Weil. 5 years ago, we took a boat trip from Hochheim to Assmannshausen and tasted the wines as we passed the vineyards. 3 years ago, went back to the roots and focussed on the history of dry wines in the Rheingau. The event took place at Weingut Robert Weil. Last year, the tasting had to be cancelled due to covid.

Grosses Gewächs (GG)

What is a VDP.Grosses Gewächs? There is still a bit of confusion out there, as (1) Grosses Gewaechs (GG) is a term that was created by the VDP only a few years ago and (2) the VDP has established a new classification for German wines that differs radically from the German standard classification (and is still in the process of refining and implementing it).

GGs and the New German Wine Classification

Although many people think that there is only one wine classification system in Germany – the classification system of the Law of 1971 – this is not correct. True, the classification system of the Law of 1971 is the standard classification system in Germany and the vast majority of winemakers in Germany use this approach. A large number of winemakers, however, have moved away from the standard, in particular the VDP producers.

In a nutshell, the VDP is moving to a classification system that resembles very much the classification system in the Bourgogne. The classification of the VDP puts the terroir principle at the center of its classification approach.

With the latest modifications of 2012, the absolutely finest vineyards are called Grosse Lage and dry wines from these super top vineyards are called Grosses Gewächs. Grosses Gewächs wines are the finest dry wines from Germany’s finest vineyards.

A step below are the Erste Lage wines. There is now talk about calling the dry wines from Erste Lage vineyards Erstes Gewächs.

The Rheingau

It is remarkable: For its entire length of nearly 560 miles, the Rhine flows north with one exception – a 28-mile stretch where the river changes its course. Here, it flows to the west, thereby enabling both the river and the vineyards facing it to bask in the warmth of the sun all day long. This is the Rheingau, one of the medium-size German wine regions. It is a quietly beautiful region, rich in tradition. Queen Victoria's enthusiasm for Hochheim's wines contributed to their popularity in England, where they, and ultimately, Rhine wines in general, were referred to as Hock.

The third President of the USA - and notable bon viveur - Thomas Jefferson visited the Rheingau in 1788 and wrote that the wine of the "Abbaye of Johnsberg is the best made on the Rhine without comparison … That of the year 1775 is the best." He also referred to the Rheingau’s Riesling as the "small and delicate Rhysslin which grows only from Hochheim to Rudesheim". Impressed by the quality of the Rheingau Riesling wines, he bought 100 grapevines to take back to his estate in Virginia.

Picture: The Rheingau

Although the Rheingau is one of Germany’s smaller wine-growing regions, its 3,100 ha (7,660 acres) of vineyards are vastly diverse in their geological makeup. The soil varies from stony slate at the western part near the villages of Assmannshausen and Rüdesheim to loess, sand and marl in the lower central villages of Geisenheim, Johannisberg, Winkel, Oestrich and Hattenheim. Soil reverts to stony phyllite in the higher central and eastern villages of Hallgarten, Kiedrich and Hochheim. Generally, wines from the lower slopes where the soil is heavier—sandy loam and loess—produce fuller wines, while at the higher slopes where it is more stony and slatey, the wines reflect more minerality, elegance and concentration.

The Rheingau enjoys a distinctly continental climate with cold winters and warm, but not hot, summers. The Rheingau is dominated by Riesling, accounting for 4/5 of the vineyard area. Pinot Noir accounts for 1/10 and is concentrated around Assmannshausen.

The 2021 VDP.Rheingau GG Event

The event had 4 parts.

First, we started with a boat trip that took us down the Rhine from Wiesbaden Biebrich to Oestrich Winkel. The focus of the boat trip was on ultra-premium Sekt.

Second, in Oestrich Winkel we visited "Anleger Allendorf", a new restaurant on the Rhine run by Weingut Allendorf, and the historic "Brentanohaus", also run by Weingut Allendorf.

Third, a bus took us from there to Schloss Vollrads, where we spent the rest of the day. At the center was an extensive tasting of 29 new GGs from the Rheingau, introduced by the respective producer.

Fourth, following the tasting, some of us took a little tour of Schloss Vollrads. We all ended the day with dinner, music and more wine.

Pictures: Leaving Wiesbaden Biebrich on Board of the Rhein Dream

Part 1: The new VDP Classification of Sekt: VDP.Sekt and VDP.Sekt.Prestige

We started the event with a 90 minutes boat trip down the Rhine from Wiesbaden Biebrich to Oestrich Winkel. The focus of the boat trip was on ultra-premium Sekt.

Earlier this year, the VDP membership adopted a new Sekt classification.

There are now two standards of Sekt - VDP.SEKT and VDP.SEKT.PRESTIGE®. Traditional bottle fermentation is obligatory for both. Vintage Sekts must be granted at least 24 months (VDP.SEKT) or 36 months (VDP.SEKT.PRESTIGE®) on the lees. Grand Sekts may also mature well beyond those minimum guidelines. The VDP's strict production regulations will also apply for the production of Sekt base wines. A dedicated VDP specification guide has also been developed to provide other mandatory Sekt parameters. This includes, for example, stipulations that Sekt produced in accordance with the VDP.SEKT.STATUT must originate from the estate’s own suitable vineyards. From pruning to harvest - which traditionally falls on the early side for sparkling wines - all vineyard work and harvesting is to be performed by hand. Beyond this, each region will define its own permissible varieties for VDP.SEKT and VDP.SEKT.PRESTIGE®, typically Riesling and the Pinot family, supplemented by regional classics. This flexibility at the regional level reflects the insight that a Sekt classification focused tightly on origin overlooks some admirable parts of the spectrum of fine German sekts. As a result, varietal blends and cuvées from single sites will also be allowed.

5 Rheingau VDP producers presented their world class Sekts, so little known in the world. But things are changing and consumers from around the world are increasingly appreciating the outstanding sparklers from Germany.

Part 2: Weingut Allendorf - Anleger Allendorf and Brentanohaus

In Oestrich Winkel we visited "Anleger Allendorf", a new restaurant on the Rhine run by Weingut Allendorf, and the historic "Brentanohaus", also run by Weingut Allendorf.

The Brentanohaus was built in the middle of the 18th century by the Ackermann family from Bingen, and has been in the possession of the Brentano family whose ancestors come from an Italian noble family for almost 200 years. The ancestors, coming from the wine-growing region around Lake Como, "nobiles de Brenta, dicti de Brentanis" have a "Brenta", i.e. a wooden tub for grapes, in their coat of arms. Towards the end of the 17th century the family settled in the trade town of Frankfurt where it founded a branch of the rapidly flourishing Milan trading house. In 1804, the family acquired the elongated building with the vast mansard roof which is surrounded by an extensive garden and a wall. In summer the estate in Winkel was the centre of the big family and meeting place for their circle of friends. Among their friends were well-known personalities from arts and science who were followers of Romanticism such as e.g. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the brothers Grimm and many more. Originally preserved rooms and parlours in the Brentanohaus convey an impression of the living culture and the sense of life during this time.

Part 3: The new VDP.Grosses Gewächs Wines, at Schloss Vollrats

At the center was an extensive tasting of 29 new GGs from the Rheingau, introduced by the respective producer. We tasted 26 whites from 2019 and 2020 and 3 reds from 2019. The tasting took place in the historic rooms of Schloss Vollrads.

Schloss Vollrads

Schloss Vollrads is a historical monument and one of the art-historical highlights of the Rheingau region. It is also one of the oldest wine estates in the world; wine sales have been documented as early as 1211.

Picture: Arriving at Schloss Vollrads

The impressive tower house, built in 1330, was constructed on the foundation of a roman defense tower.

Schloss Vollrads was owned since 983 until 1218 by the Archbishop of Mainz and since then until 1997 by the family of Greiffenclau. In 1997 – in view of unsurmountable debts - Count Erwein Matuschka-Greiffenclau committed suicide and since then the Nassauische Bank, a government-owned bank, is the owner of Schloss Vollrads.

Picture: At Schloss Vollrads

Schloss Vollrads is a rather large estate by German standards, with 60 hectares of vineyard land, and produces exclusively Riesling wines. Some of the vineyards were already in the possession of the Greiffenclau family in 1300.

Tasting

The wines were presented in flights of 3 wines. Most of the producers were present and introduced their wines personally. The tasting took place in one of the larger rooms of Schloss Vollrads.

Pictures: Meeting 3 Superstars and an old Friend: Tasting at the Veritable Groupe Show in Frankfurt with Eve Faiveley of Domaine Faively, Matthieu Perrin of Famille Perrin and Château de Beaucastel, Jean Frédéric Hugel of Famille Hugel and Tony Smith of Quinta de Covela

The Veritable Groupe wine trade show 2021 took place in Frankfurt on September 6 and 7. It brought to Frankfurt the about 100 wine producers of the Veritable Groupe portfolio. Annette and I were happy to be able to attend the trade show and taste wines with top winemakers mostly from France, but also Germany and other European countries. We were thrilled to meet again in person, producers and owners of many renowed estates, in particular

Eve Faveley of Domaine Faively, an estate we visit regularly on the Bourgogne tours by ombiasy winetours; recently we saw each other at Faively winemaker dinner at the Kronenschlösschen in the Rheingau;

Matthieu Perrin from the Perrin family with their flagship estate Château de Beaucastel; recently Annette saw Matthieu at a winemaker dinner at Kronenschlösschen with superstar chef Christian Bau,

Jean Frédéric Hugel from the Famille Hugel, the legendary Alsace producer in Riquewhir; a couple of years ago Jean Frédéric gave us a memorable tour when we were in Alsace during a Germany South/ Alsace tour by ombiasy winetours, and finally

Tony Smith, owner of Quinta de Covela, Vinho Verde Region in the Douro Valley; we spent a wonderful evening and night at Quinta de Covela a few years ago as part of an European Wine Bloggers Conference.

There were so many others, from superstars like Augusto Boffa of Pio Cesare and Sofia Thanisch of Weingut Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben to the up and coming Karsten Peters of Weingut F. & F. Peters. Karsten Peters has been making wines since 1998, including for 13 years at Weingut St. Antony, but in 2017 Karsten decided to move on an create his own estate, which now accounts for 4,5 hectars.

Superstar: Eve Faively of Domaine Faiveley, Bourgogne

Domaine Joseph Faiveley is one of the biggest domains in the Bourgogne and, many would argue, one of the best. This illustrious company has been based in Nuits St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by (1) the first François, (2) Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, (3) Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, (4) François who recently retired and (5) now his children Eve and Erwan.

We have visited Domaine Joseph Faiveley several times. Last time, in 2019, Matilde Nicolas, Communications Director, was out host.

More recently, we met owner Eve Faively at a winemaker dinner in the Rheingau.

A few days ago, we enjoyed very much a tasting of the vintage with owner Eve Faiveley in Frankfurt at the veritable groupe show.

Superstar: Matthieu Perrin of Perrin Family, Château de Beaucastel and Tablas Creek

wine-searcher.com: Famille Perrin is a leading wine producer and négociant in the southern Rhône Valley. The business was established in 1997, and today makes wines from some of the region's most famous appellations, including Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Perrin family has been making wine in the region since the early 1900s, when scientist Pierre Perrin inherited the Château de Beaucastel estate. Perrin's grandchildren, François and Jean-Pierre, founded the Famille Perrin business together before passing on the reins two years later to the fifth-generation Perrin, Pierre, in 1999.

In addition to its renowned Château de Beaucastel estate, Famille Perrin's portfolio includes Miraval, Domaine du Clos des Tourelles and La Vielle Ferme. Domaine du Clos des Tourelles is situated in Gigondas and comprises 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyards planted to 80 percent Grenache, with smaller plantings of Syrah, Cinsaut and Mourvèdre. The La Vielle Ferme brand was established in the 1970s, and comprises a range of red, rosé and white wines from vineyards in Ventoux and Luberon. Famille Perrin uses organic and biodynamic approaches in its vineyards.

Also, the Perrin family owns jointly with the Haas family the famous Tablas Creek Estate in Paso Robles, California.

Annette Schiller met sixth generation Perrin, Matthieu, at a winemaker dinner in 2020, the last one she attended before the corona crisis.

Unfortunately, we have never been to Château de Beaucastel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape,but have been to Tablas Greek and have attended winemaker dinners with Tablas Creek co-owner and winemaker Jason Haas in Washington DC.

Superstar: Jean Frédéric Hugel from Famille Hugel, Alsace

Famille Hugel is one of the major producers of Alsace wine, and has been an important force in the Alsace wine industry in its developments during the second half of the 20th century. For over 370 years and with 13-family generations the Hugel family has unrivaled experience and knowledge of Alsace vineyards and winemaking. Known today for their passion and modern outlook, the dynamic Hugel family, located in the picture-postcard fortified village of Riquewihr, has earned a worldwide reputation for their Alsace wines.

Owner Jean Frédéric Hugel was our host at the Germany-South and Alsace 2017 tour by ombiasy winetours. We toured the winery, which is situated right in the center of Riquewihr, and then sat down for a most impressive tasting, including a wine fom 1945.

Old Friend: Owner Tony Smith of Quinta Corvela, Douro Valley, Portugal

The 2013 Digital Wine Communications Conference (DWCC) in Logroño, La Rioja, Spain, did not only take me to Spain, but also to Portugal. The conference included 3 pre-conference press trips, including one to the Douro Valley.

One of the highlights was our stay at Quinta de Covela in the Vinho Verde Region. After a period of neglect, Quinta de Covela was purchased in 2011 and brought back to life by two impassioned wine lovers, one from Brazil and one from England. The latter, Tony Smith, orchestrated our visit.

I will never forget the stay at Quinta de Covela and was thrilled to meet Tony again in Frankfurt. He showed us new vintages of wines he had already produced while we were there as well as new wines.

Dinner at L’ Ecume in Frankfurt, with Chef/ Owner Alexandre Sadowczyk - 45th Wedding Anniversary, Germany

Picture: Dinner at L'Ecume

Annette Schiller and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at L'Ecume in the Nordend yesterday. We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. Chef and owner Alexandre Sadowczyk is French. He came to Frankfurt in 2014. L’Ecume is his first own restaurant, a small bistro that could be in the 7th arrondissement in Paris, where we used to live.

Alexandre Sadowczyk wants to offer fusion cuisine, French flair with a local twist. Reflecting his roots, Alexandre Sadowczyk`s wine list is dominated by French wines and in particular strong in terms of Champagnes.

Alexandre Sadowczyk started his career in Frankfurt at Lafleuer (2 stars Michelin) and also worked at Weinsinn (1 star Michelin).

The menu is small. This month there are 9 items on it. You can choose between any of them, starting with 4 courses for Euro 65. Annette and I both took the 5 courses menu with accompanying wines (for Euro 45). Between the two of us, except for the meat course, we were able to taste all courses on ther menu.

Pictures:  Chef and Owner Alexandre Sadowczyk and Chef de Restaurant/ Sommelier David John Zisow

L'Ecume is listed in the Michelin Guide, but not (yet) in the Gault Millau Guide. I would put L'Ecume at 15 points in terms of the Gault Millau Guide rating system. The food reminded me very much of bidlabu (15 points) and SchauMahl (15 points).

Yesterday, we were dining with 6 other people in the restaurant. Chef de Restaurant/ Sommelier David John Zisow, a compatriot from the Washington DC area, took very good care of us.

Tour, Tasting and Lunch at Château Desmirail, Appellation Margaux, 3ième Grand Cru Classé - Bordeaux Tour 2018 by ombiasy WineTours, France

Picture: Tour and Lunch at Château Desmirail, Appellation Margaux, 3ième Grand Cru Classé, with Owner Denis Lurton

Château Desmirail is another château owned by a member of the Lurton family (the fourth on this tour). Lucien Lurton acquired this property in 1980 and passed it on to his son Denis - a lawyer by profession - in 1992. Before that the château changed hands several times: the château belonged to the Desmirail family until just before the 1855 classification, when it was purchased by Monsieur Sipière, the estate manager at Château Margaux. It was under his ownership that Desmirail was classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé. In the early 20s century the property was owned by Robert de Mendelssohn, the nephew of the famous German composer. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War it came into the ownership of Château Palmer until 1980. Today, Château Desmirail belongs to the group of the „under the radar“ châteaux.

Denis Lurton was our host. We had a light lunch at Château Desmirail. Before lunch, Denis showed us around and conducted a tasting with us.

Pictures: Tour and Lunch at Château Desmirail, Appellation Margaux, 3ième Grand Cru Classé, with Owner Denis Lurton

History

Denis Lurton: The name DESMIRAIL has been associated with wine production in the Médoc region since the end of the seventeenth century. Jean Desmirail, a lawyer in Bordeaux's parliament, gave his name to the property when he received it as part of his wife’s, Demoiselle Rausan du Ribail dowry.

The château belonged to the Desmirail family until just before the 1855 classification, when it was purchased by Monsieur Sipière, the estate manager at Château Margaux. It was under his ownership that Desmirail was classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé (third growth).

Pictures: Tour and Lunch at Château Desmirail, Appellation Margaux, 3ième Grand Cru Classé, with Owner Denis Lurton

At the beginning of the twentieth century the property was briefly owned by Robert de Mendelssohn, the nephew of the famous composer, before being acquired by Martial Michel, a glove maker from the north of France. Michel went on to sell the château shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War to Château Palmer.

The Château Palmer company owned the property for several years before selling it to Lucien Lurton, an iconic figure in the Bordeaux wine world, in 1980.

In 1992, Lucien Lurton passed on his properties to each of his ten children. Denis, one of the older children and a lawyer by profession, took over the management of Château Desmirail. Today Denis is taking his father's work even further, modernizing the wine making facilities and putting all of his energy into the development of this Grand Cru Classé.

3 Different Vat Rooms

Denis Lurton: Desmirail's remarkable winery buildings date from the end of the nineteenth century, and reflect various architectural styles. There are three vat rooms, corresponding to different periods in the property's history.

- At the end of the nineteenth century, an invention arrived that revolutionized vat rooms: the Médoc Vat Room, which operates by gravity. A remarkable example was built at Desmirail; typical of the period, it consists of an exceptional roof structure in the shape of the inverted hull of a ship, and then underneath there are cast iron pillars (emblematic of the industrial era). This room has held four oak casks since 1999.

- In 1997, Denis Lurton invested in a modern stainless steel vat room, with vats of various capacities to enable vinification on a plot-by-plot basis.

- During the 2010 harvest, a smaller vat room was inaugurated, consisting of oak vats, reserved mainly for the vinification of the older plots.

The property is also equipped with three cellar rooms, displaying a combination of traditional architecture and modern features, they are used to store barrels of the First and Second wine.

In the modernisation of these facilities, Denis Lurton and Technical Director Pierre Lafeuillade have been able to optimize and customize the existing buildings while at the same time preserving their original character.

Pictures: Tour and Lunch at Château Desmirail, Appellation Margaux, 3ième Grand Cru Classé, with Owner Denis Lurton

The Birth of the Wine

Denis Lurton: Harvests: Each wine is the result of a year's work in the vineyard. The grapes are hand-picked by a team of sixty people. After being transported to the vat room, the bunches are de-stemmed and the grapes are sorted and crushed, before being vinified on a plot-by-plot basis. This vinification of each parcel enables an expression of the diversity of the terroir and of the individual grape varieties.

Vinifications: Two types of vat are used for vinification: oak and stainless steel. The wooden ones are preferred for the older plots. Traditional vinification techniques are employed, with steady, gentle extraction, adapted to each grape variety.

Blending: The pivotal stage in the creation of each vintage is the blending wich is carried out in November. The owner, assisted by the technical director and the consultant oenologist, Jacques Boissenot, select which vats will be used to make Desmirail (the First wine) and Initial de Desmirail (the Second wine). The decision is based on a consensus between the team at the property and the oenologist, who brings his experience and an external eye.

Maturing: The wines are matured in barrels for about a year. For the Grand Vin, the percentage of new barrels varies depending on the vintage but is never less than 30 %. Approximately every three months, the wines are racked in order to clarify them. Finally, after a year, the wines are blended in the wooden vats and given a final clarification with egg white.

Bottling: This takes place at the château about twenty months after the harvest.

The Wines

We tasted 2 wines, the grand vin 2012 and the second wine, also 2012.

German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter): Return to in-person Events with a Wine Cruise on the Potomac, USA/ Germany

Pictures: German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter): Return to in-person Events with a Wine Cruise on the Potomac

On July 10, 2021, from 4-6 pm, the German Wine Society’s Capital Chapter held its first in-person event since the membership meeting in February 2020 before the start of the covid-19 pandemic, a summer wine cruise on the Potomac aboard the Nightingale operated by Potomac River Cruises. The event was sold out with 50 German wine lovers joining us.

Announcement

Get ready to cast off on the Potomac for a German wine cruise! Yes, the Capital Chapter of the German Wine Society is resuming in-person events this summer. Our kick-off will be an experience we have missed for several years (though it was a regular event from 2010-2013 and earlier), the traditional GWS summer wine cruise past the beautiful river banks and monuments of our nation’s Capital, passing Hains Point and the newly redeveloped Southwest Waterfront.

Please join us to enjoy many wines from Germany and other countries as we cruise along the Potomac for two hours, from 4 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, July 10, 2021. We will board Capitol River Cruises’ Nightingale II from the Georgetown waterfront, at 3050 K Street N.W., Washington, D.C. - the end of 31st Street, by the Fiola Mare restaurant. Be sure to be on the wharf before departure time - the cruise boat cannot wait for late arrivals! We can accommodate only 45 guests on the Nightingale II for this event, so reserve early to avoid disappointment. Reservations for this event are due by Tuesday, July 6, 2021, to give us sufficient time to have enough wine for all aboard. Parking is readily available in garages along the Georgetown riverfront, and it is possible to walk from Metro at the Foggy Bottom station as well.

Pictures: German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter): Return to in-person Events with a Wine Cruise on the Potomac

We will be providing all the wines for this event, as well as disposable plastic glasses and cutlery, paper plates and napkins. Guests should plan to bring their own food on board for greater safety, though we may provide some surprise treats. This will be a relaxing cruise, with no presentation, allowing everyone to concentrate on the wines, good company and atmosphere. There are many outdoor and indoor dining establishments along the Georgetown waterfront for dinner after the cruise, which we encourage you to try. The Nightingale II is a boat we have used for some previous cruises, and is all on one level, with tables and chairs, and a bar from which we can serve wines. It also has protection against inclement weather, though we have been fortunate with our past wine cruises and reasonably hope for a sunny afternoon once again. The cruise will take place rain or shine, unless weather conditions do not allow the cruise to set out safely, in which case we will reschedule or provide refunds. The wines for our cruise will be a mixture of whites and reds, mostly German but with some other international and U.S. wines included as well for variety - all with some German or Austrian grape connection. Get ready to savor some very special, high-prädikat wines! We want to remind everyone of the lovely qualities of German wines we have missed sharing with each other in-person.

Here’s the wine list we have planned:

nv Peter Lauer Riesling Sparkling Mosel

nv Dr. Loosen Riesling Sparkling Mosel

2018 Villa Wolf Pinot Gris or Gewürztraminer Pfalz

2017 Dr. Loosen Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Mosel

2014 Otium Blaufränkisch, United States

2015 Otium Gruner Veltliner, United States

2012 Shelter Winery Spatburgunder, Baden

2016 Clemens Busch von Roten Schiefer Riesling Mosel

2017 Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett Mosel

2015 St. Christopher Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese Mosel

2015 Max Ferd. Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese

2013 Siefried Nelson Sweet Riesling, New Zealand

Pictures: German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter): Return to in-person Events with a Wine Cruise on the Potomac

Our event cost is $63 for members and $70 for non-member guests.

We are very pleased that it has become safe enough to contemplate doing in-person events once again, consistent with CDC guidelines and local D.C. health rules. For added security of our members, however, we request that you attend this event only if you have been fully vaccinated against covid-19. Hopefully, by the fall, vaccinations will be widespread enough that we will no longer need to insist on this for all in-person events, but our country and region are not quite there yet, and we want everyone to be able to feel secure in attending this special wine cruise. We have also been informed that the cruise company will ask our guests to wear masks when boarding and interacting with boat crew (the crew has also been vaccinated) but masks will not be required otherwise once everyone is aboard - a significant advantage of doing an outdoor event.
